7 Days Rongai Route
7 Days Rongai Route Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary
The 7-day Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro's quiet northern approach, beginning near the Kenyan border and climbing gradually through montane forest and open moorland. With shorter daily stages and dedicated acclimatization at camps such as Second Cave and Mawenzi Tarn, this itinerary offers excellent preparation for the summit.
After crossing the dramatic high-altitude Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, you make your midnight bid for Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres the roof of Africa. Descent is via the Marangu Route on the southern side, so you experience two completely different faces of Kilimanjaro in a single expedition with Baobab Safari Adventure's certified guides and full mountain crew.

Your 7-Day Rongai Trek
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Depending on your arrival time, you can relax and prepare for your upcoming adventure.
In the evening, you will meet your mountain guide for a comprehensive trek briefing and equipment check to ensure you are fully prepared for your Kilimanjaro climb.
After breakfast, drive to the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border and complete registration at Rongai Gate. The trail begins through peaceful forest and farmland, offering excellent opportunities to spot monkeys and colorful bird species.
As the forest gradually opens into moorland, you arrive at Simba Camp, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the Kenyan plains.
Today's trek is shorter, allowing your body more time to adjust to the increasing altitude. The trail climbs gently through open moorland with spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding landscapes.
Upon arrival at Second Cave Camp, you will have plenty of time to rest, explore the area, and enjoy the tranquility of the mountain.
The route continues across rolling hills and rocky terrain as the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Giant groundsels and unique alpine vegetation line the trail, creating a truly remarkable mountain environment.
After arriving at Kikelewa Camp, enjoy stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing.
A steady climb leads you to the beautiful Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. This is one of the most scenic camps on Mount Kilimanjaro and provides excellent conditions for acclimatization.
Spend the afternoon relaxing and enjoying breathtaking views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Today's trek crosses the vast Saddle, a dramatic high-altitude desert that stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is barren and otherworldly, offering incredible panoramic views.
Upon reaching Kibo Hut, enjoy an early dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.
Shortly after midnight, begin the final ascent to the summit. The climb is demanding but incredibly rewarding as you make your way to Gilman's Point and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.
Celebrate your achievement, take unforgettable photographs, and enjoy the magnificent sunrise over the African plains. After spending time at the summit, descend to Kibo Hut for a short break before continuing to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay.
The final descent takes you through beautiful moorland and lush rainforest. Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, receive your summit certificate and celebrate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest.
